Activity

PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk or commonly abbreviated as BRI, is an Indonesian state-owned bank that decided to purchase and launched its own satellite in 2016.

Vision / Objective / Roles

BRIsat is the name of a satellite owned by Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), a banking company in Indonesia. The BRIsat satellite was built by Space Systems/Loral (SSL) and launched at the Arianespace launch center.

The satellite is estimated to have been launched by the Ariane 5 rocket at the Guiana Space Center, European spaceport in 2016. The BRIsat satellite is capable of reaching Indonesia, ASEAN, East Asia , including parts of China, the Pacific Ocean, including Hawaii. and Western Australia.

The satellite with a 36X36 MHz C-band and 9X72 MHz Ku-band transponder will orbit in the 150.5 east longitude slot. The orbit line was previously occupied by an expired Indosat satellite, Palapa C2.

The orbital slot was allocated to the BRI by order of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia on the grounds that Indosat no longer used the slot.

The reason for setting up a satellite for this bank is to reduce communication expenses between employee bodies as well as with customers throughout Indonesia and outside Indonesia. By using this technology, the BRI believes it will save around 50% on telecommunications costs. The contract for the manufacture and launch of the BRIsat is estimated at 230 million US dollars, or approximately 2.5 trillion Rp

The BRIsat satellite has 45 transponders with the use of 23 transponders for the BRI and four transponders for the government i.e. Indonesian National Police, Indonesian National Armed Forces Headquarters, State Intelligence Agency Indonesian Maritime Safety Agency and the Indonesian Ministry of Finance.
